Annette from Cançonièr sent me this information and I have to admit, I’m totally intrigued!

Cançonièr presents music for a fascinating and little-understood phenomenon: during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, certain areas (especially in Germany) experienced brief outbreaks of manic, “contagious” dancing that often afflicted dozens, or even hundreds. Otherwise ordinary people would succumb to a compulsion to dance furiously for days or weeks on end, some to their deaths. Many feared that they had been cursed by saints, and perhaps gave in to mass hysteria; the true causes are still debated. Music was offered for the dancers in the hope that it would ease their suffering, or appease divine wrath. Instrumental and vocal dance music, flagellant songs, penitential prayers, tarantellas, and more!

The Los Gatos Community Foundation is hosting a new community music event called Bandstand Boogie to be held Saturday, September 3, Labor Day Weekend, in Oak Meadow Park at the historic Lyndon Bandstand from 2:00pm-10:00pm. The free event will present a full day and evening of live music performances by award winning artists. Proceeds from food, Beer/Wine sales, and Sponsorships will benefit the new Los Gatos Youth Sports Park Snack Shack.

“Many communities have been successful with the "Community Dance” concept and we felt Los Gatos could take the concept even further,” says Mary Tomasi-Dubois, chair person and LGCF Board Member, “hosting the event at one of Los Gatos beautiful parks, offering a full day of fantastic music, and then an evening of dancing under the stars, the environment will really provide attendees a wonderful experience - and proceeds from concessions benefit a community youth project in our town, which is the mission of the Los Gatos Community Foundation.”

The original concept came from Paul Kent, lead singer of ...
